How to reach Matera
Through Bari
You have to first get to Bari which is connected to the national railway system Trenitalia.
It’s a 4-hour train ride from Rome to Bari.
Get off at Bari Centrale station, exit the main station and go to a smaller regional railway station just outside it.
When you walk outside onto the piazza outside the station, just look to your left, and you should see a building with the words “Ferrovie Appulo Lucane”.
- Time Bari-Matera: about 1 hour 30 minutes
- There are c.a. 14 trains a day (6 express trains).
- If you take the local train, you have to change at Alta Mura station.
- Please be careful not to miss Matera Central station (Matera Centrale).
From Rome through Ferrandina-Pomarico-Miglionico
- From Rome to Ferrandina-Pomarico-Miglionico, you can use IC (Intercity) of the Italian State Railways. It takes 5 hours 30 minutes.
- From the bus stop named Ferrandina Scalo, it takes 35 minutes by bus to Matera.
- Bus runs only on weekdays.
- Bus timetables can be found on the “Ferrovie Appulo Lucane”.
